| No Mandatory NAIS I’m writing to make everyone aware of NAIS, which is threatening our traditional way of life here in Ohio and the entire US. The NAIS is the National Animal Identification System which the USDA has instituted. At this time participation in this program is voluntary by state, but each state can make it mandatory. It is mandatory in Michigan at this time. ODA plans to make it mandatory in Ohio by 2009. If NAIS becomes mandatory in Ohio, every premise that holds, produces or manages livestock will be required to be registered. This includes farms, markets, stock yards, processing plants, fairgrounds, auctions, and your back yard, etc. The following species are all included: bovine (bison, cattle) equine (horses, donkeys, mules) goats poultry (chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, guinea fowl, and squab) captive game birds (pheasants, quail, wild turkeys, migratory wildfowl, pigeons, and exotic birds,) sheep swine (other than wild hogs but including pot belly pigs) cervid (deer, elk, moose, caribou, reindeer) camelids (llamas, alpacas) ratites (rheas, ostriches, emu, cassowary, kiwi) fish (aquaculture) At this time dogs, cats and rabbits are exempt from this regulation. With NAIS, each animal included will be assigned an individual number. Each time you buy, sell, or loan an animal, you must report it to the Ohio Dept of Agriculture. Each time an animal gives birth or dies, you must report it to the ODA. Every time you take an animal from your premises for any reason, including 4H projects at the fair, you must report it to the ODA. There is no fee to register your premises but there is a fee for each and every animal you register with this program, which you, the owner, will have to pay. I have strong objections to this program becoming mandatory and hope all of you do, too. We are losing our freedoms in this country on a daily basis, do we want the government intruding even further into our daily lives and business? Our military is fighting and dying to preserve our freedom, we need to fight, as well, here at home. This program was instituted by the USDA without any vote by the general public. Some states are making it mandatory without any vote by the general public, we all need to make sure Ohio isn’t one of them. Do you think NAIS becoming mandatory won’t affect you because you don’t raise or keep animals? Think about this, what happens any time it costs more to produce any commodity or product? That cost is passed on to the consumer, that’s you and me and anyone else who eats meat or keeps a few chickens for fresh eggs. Does one of your kids or grandkids take a goat or pony to the county fair? It will affect you. Do you raise a steer or pig for the freezer? It will affect you. What can we do? Contact the Ohio State Representatives, State Senators, the Governor, and the ODA and let them know what you think of this program. Suggest that they pass a law here in Ohio that will prohibit making NAIS a mandatory program. Write letters to your local papers to make others aware of this situation and ask that they get involved, as well. We all need to act now to stop NAIS from becoming mandatory.
